Job interviews are very important. An interview is likely the best chance for you to demonstrate that you are a good fit to work at a company, or that you have the type of personality that an employer is looking for in his or her team.

In fact, many professionals believe that the job interview is the most important part of the overall hiring process. While things like posture and how you dress factor in, the most important part of the interview is how you communicate.

While every job interview is different, there are several questions that commonly get asked during the interview process.

Here are six popular job interview questions, with some great tips on how to answer them. 

“Tell Me About Yourself.”

This is one of the first questions you will likely get asked during the interview process so you should definitely be prepared for it.

As you prepare to answer the question, keep in mind that the interviewer already knows a lot about you; the company has a copy of your resume and has reviewed it, along with whatever additional information you provided during the interview process.

So, use your answer to fill in the blanks that your resume doesn’t cover. Explain why you took certain jobs or left them, along with what you learned in your previous work or education.

When talking about yourself, you should be able to explain to the interviewer why you are such a great fit for the team. 

“Why Do You Want the Job?”

When you answer this question, you should demonstrate that you’ve done your homework and understand the company well.

You should communicate to the interviewer that you like the company and would be excited about working there in the position you are applying for.

Talk about the company’s organizational culture or accomplishments it had in the recent past that make you really interested in working there.

You should be able to bring your answer around to why you’d be a good fit for the job there, too.

Additionally, answering this question should also be a gut check for you; if you’re really not excited about going to work at the company, then why are you even applying for the job in the first place? 

“Why Should We Hire You?”

You should really be providing a response to this with every single question you answer for your interviewer. However, when this specific question comes directly at you, answer it concisely with confidence.

You should sum up your attributes, from your education, certifications, and qualifications, to your past work experience, and make the interviewer certain that you would be a great choice for this job.

You should also talk about your personal values and work ethic and convince the interviewer that you are a great fit for the company’s organizational culture as well.

Overall, if the interviewer doesn’t already believe it, make him or her believe you will be value-added to the company if you are hired. 

“Why Do You Want to Leave Your Current Job?”

If you are leaving your work position or you’ve already left it, expect to be asked about this during the job interview.

You should avoid pitfalls about interpersonal problems in the workplace or negativity about your current job since that could end up being a turnoff during the interview.

Instead, use your answer to demonstrate that while you really like (or liked) your old job, the new assignment excites you and offers you new opportunities that you are really interested in.

If you left your last job under challenging circumstances and the interviewer knows it, you should still strive to turn this into a positive and communicate what you learned from your old job; try to make the interviewer understand how you’ll apply your experience from your past job in future assignments. 

“How Would You Handle a Difficult Situation?”

You should expect a question involving a tough scenario during the interview that you might be expected to resolve if you get hired.

If you’re applying for a managerial position, you may be asked how you’d handle a difficult employee. Other people may be asked how they’d handle stress in the workplace.

Take a moment to think, then provide a concise, step-by-step answer to the best of your ability on how you would address the issue. Draw from your past, real-life experiences if you are able to since this could help highlight the experience you have.

If possible, you should also do a little research ahead of time to see how the company you’re applying to work for handles certain types of problems; this will help you ensure your answer fits well with the organization’s current policies and culture. 

“What is Your Greatest Weakness?”

Another job interview question you’re likely to face these days is about your shortfalls. What is it that you really need to work on as a professional in the workplace?

Answering this question gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to learn new things and how you attempt to overcome obstacles and solve problems.

Try to be as honest and yet as positive as possible in your response. Identify for the interviewer a real personal shortfall that you have that affects your performance.

Then, once you’ve described the weakness, talk about the things you’ve done to overcome or mitigate it, such as taking classes, working to confront the problem, etc.

Your candor and openness can be an opportunity to connect with the interviewer and demonstrate that you’re willing to confront and overcome obstacles, all positive things as you attempt to land the job!
